Ivan Steinberg is the jewish former CEO of Verizon who was in control of that company when the Bush warrantless wiretapping scandal broke in 2006. When Verizon was implicated, Steinberg replied that the company had acted “in full compliance with the law”, adding “we are committed to safeguarding our customers’ privacy”. Shortly thereafter, Seidenberg began lobbying Congress to grant Verizon retroactive immunity from lawsuits seeking billions from the telecommunications giant for its participation in Bush’s secret, warrantless surveillance programs, which targeted everyday Americans. At the time, some speculated that such lawsuits could have destroyed the company. As a remedy, Seidenberg wrote large personal checks to Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV). In exchange, Rockefeller steered the secretive Senate Intelligence Committee into giving retroactive immunity to telecom companies such as Verizon.
